The Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon is the most famous and sacred pagoda of Myanmar, covered by tons of gold and over 5000 diamonds. It goes back to an ancient stupa built 588 BC in the life-time of Buddha (632-543 BC), bearing relics like eight hairs of Buddha. It was rebuilt between 6th and 10th century by the Mon, further main constructions in 14th and 19th century.
